Rakeback vs cashback vs lossback

Rakeback and cashback both return money to players, but they are calculated from different things. Rakeback is a share of the rake or house edge on every bet, so it pays whether you win or lose. Cashback, also called lossback, is a share of your net losses over a period, so it pays only when you are down.

This guide shows how each one works, when each pays more, and what to watch for in the terms.

The difference in one table

Rakeback Cashback / lossback
Calculated from rake (poker) or house edge (casino) on every bet net loss over a day, week or month
Pays after a winning period yes no
Pays after a losing period yes yes
Depends on volume results
Typical rates from a few percent up to 80%, depending on base and operator usually 2% to 25%, up to 50% at Housebets
Typical wagering usually none sometimes, from x3 to x40

Worked example: one player, two programs

A casino player wagers $20,000 in a week on games with a 2% house edge. The expected loss is $400.

Week result 20% rakeback on house edge 10% cashback on net loss
Lost $400 (expected) $80 $40
Lost $1,500 (bad week) $80 $150
Won $600 (good week) $80 $0

Rakeback gives the same $80 in every case, because it depends only on how much was wagered. Cashback swings with results: nothing in a winning week, more in a bad one.

When rakeback pays more

  • You play a lot and want a predictable return.
  • You expect winning periods, as a winning poker player does.

When cashback pays more

  • You play less often and want a cushion for losing weeks.
  • The cashback rate is high relative to the rakeback offered.
  • The cashback carries no wagering requirement.

Wagering changes the value

Cashback with wagering is worth less than it looks. BitStarz weekly cashback, for example, must be wagered x40 within 24 hours: $100 of cashback needs $4,000 of bets before it can be withdrawn. Most house-edge rakeback, at Stake, Shuffle or Betpanda, has no wagering at all.

Operators that pay both, or let you choose

Operator What it offers
Housebets Rewards Slider: split each cycle between rakeback and lossback
Betpanda daily rakeback by level plus 10% weekly cashback
Winna instant rakeback plus individual lossback
Rakebit rakeback plus daily cashback

Lossback is cashback by another name

Lossback is the term some crypto casinos use for cashback on losses. The calculation is the same: net loss × rate. Where a site uses "lossback" and "rakeback" side by side, as Housebets and Winna do, they mean these two different bases.
